Dr. David Zagzag is a prominent neuropathologist with a dedication to helping provide innovative solutions to patients. Dr. David Zagzag recognizes that neuropathology is a constantly evolving field that reflects just how far we have come in the name of medical research, and his passion for the field is rooted in a desire to provide better treatment options for brain tumor patients.
Dr. Zagzag would like to utilize this website as a resource to provide high-level insights into neuropathology. Through frequent updates that break down the ins and outs of his field, he hopes to make knowledge on the field more accessible.
About Dr. David Zagzag
Dr. David Zagzag’s passion for the medical field began when he was 16 and his brother took him to visit a medical library. This interest continued into his adult years, where he would become a Doctor of Medicine at Lariboisiere-Saint-Louis School of Medicine in Paris, France. Dr. Zagzag would later become a Doctor of Philosophy in Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. With his established background in neurology, Dr. Zagzag made the decision to dedicate his career to brain tumors. In the time since he has earned several certifications and licenses in the United States to grow his knowledge to contribute to developments within the space.
Through his more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Zagzag has worked in several different capacities within the realm of neurology and neuropathology. Currently, Dr. Zagzag is the Chief of the Division of Neuropathology, Director of the Human Brain Tumor Bank at NYU Langone Health, and Director of the Microvascular and Molecular Neuro-Oncology Laboratory at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He is also the Chair of the Professional Advisory Board of the GLi- Hope Foundation. Dr. Zagzag’s storied experience in neurology is underlined by his staunch commitment to improving quality of care and treatment options available for patients suffering with brain tumors and facilitating research to contribute to his field. Recently, Dr. Zagzag joined a team with Dr. Chandra Sen and Dr. Matija Snuderl at NYU Langone Health. The portion led by Dr. Zagzag studies chordoma cells to determine treatment options to help patients overcome the effects of low oxygen (hypoxia) on immune response to chordoma. Dr. David Zagzag’s experience studying hypoxia and immune response in brain tumors is integral to the goals of the project.
Dr. David Zagzag on Characteristics of Great Neurologists
Neurology is a vast field that includes many different specialties and subsections. Naturally, this means that that neurologists can differ in terms of skills and knowledge bases depending on their expertise. Dr. David Zagzag maintains that, while there are many different roles that neurologists can fill in patient care, many have similar traits that empower them to provide the best care possible for their patients. Here, Dr. Zagzag examines a few characteristics that are commonly exhibited by great neurologists.
Dedication to Learning
As is the case with any medical profession, learning does not end after graduation. Neurology is a constantly growing and evolving field, and professionals in the space are expected to keep up with developments in treatment options, best practices for handling patients, and innovative technologies for identifying conditions as early as possible. For this reason, neurologists are expected to complete certifications, attend events that contribute to conversations in the field, and grow their knowledge on existing strategies to best support patients. Dr. David Zagzag’s dedication to learning and developing treatment options for neurology patients drives him to participate in projects such as a National Institutes of Health funded project to elucidate molecular mechanisms implicated in a highly vascularized brain tumor known as hemangioblastoma. Neurologists are always discovering more information that will empower them to provide the best treatment possible for their patients. The most successful neurologists are often defined by their desire to remain students of the space long after they have become teachers and leaders.
Vast Knowledgebase
Great neurologists are extremely knowledgeable in their field. After all, there are many conditions and diseases that can impact the human brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, and a deep knowledge base is essential for both providing diagnoses and developing treatment strategies that best fit the needs of patients. It is important to note that many neurologists will share background knowledge amassed during their time in school and experience on the job, but some of the deeper knowledge that a neurologist may exhibit can be a result of their specialty. Part of finding the best neurologist for you may include matching their specialty to your specific needs as a patient.
Great Bedside Care and Communication Skills
For many neurologists, bedside care is crucial to the job as the profession can involve hours of examining patients’ neurological condition over the course of diagnosis or treatment. Conditions that impact the brain and the spinal cord can be immensely scary from a patient’s perspective, and bedside care helps professionals remain helpful and empathic while strategies are developed to address conditions. Great neurologists are caring towards their patients and recognize that certain conditions and treatments may need to be explained in order for non-specialists to understand the situation. Communication skills help here because they help neurologists explain conditions and treatment options while clearly answering any questions a patient may have.
Commitment to Quality Care
Dr. David Zagzag speaks to how his primary motivation as a neuropathologist is helping patients who have brain tumors receive the care necessary to improve their prognosis. Commitment to quality care is essential in neurology in part because it is a vast field that is in a constant state of innovation. Great neurologists know that a commitment to quality care is an excellent motivating factor for remaining up to date on prevailing medical technologies and the development of new, effective treatments. This dedication also ensures that neurologists are constantly working with the wellbeing of their patients in mind. When an unwavering desire to help patients is paired with a strong interest in developing the tools necessary to do so, the result is a neurologist ready to tackle almost any problem.
